Over a century old, the iconic youth organization is commonly associated with wholesome activities, strong values, the great outdoors, and a famous motto: “Be Prepared.”
Tragically, the history of scouting includes not only knot-tying, campfires, and good deeds, but a pattern of sexual misconduct and secrecy among leadership that dates back many decades and involves thousands of suspected abusers. For years, victims have lived with pain and uncertainty that nothing could have prepared them for.
In 2020, facing more than 82,000 sexual abuse claims, the Boy Scouts of America filed for Bankruptcy. The Scouting Settlement Trust, set up to resolve the claims, went into effect in April 2023. In January 2026, the Supreme Court declined to review a challenge to the settlement structure. This locked in the original ruling’s compensation plan and allowed payouts from the $2.46 billion trust to proceed. Awards are now being distributed incrementally.
